Soundproofing a microwave can be challenging, especially if the microwave isn’t inside anywhere.
For example, your microwave might be sitting on the counter, or it might be above the stove.
I don’t where you have your microwave, but if you want to soundproof your microwave, it is preferred that you have it above your stove.
This doesn’t mean you can’t soundproof your microwave that’s sitting on the counter because that is totally possible.
In this post, I’m going to reveal five things you can do to soundproof your microwave. Some of the five things will either apply to both the microwave above the stove and the counter, or either one.
I’ll mention whether this applies to both, or either one in each option I’ll be presenting to you.
Make sure to pay close attention, so you’re able to do this correctly.
There is absolutely no need to hire a professional to soundproof your microwave, since you can do this yourself.
Hiring a professional is expensive, and it is less expensive to buy the materials needed to soundproof your microwave than it is to hire a professional.
By doing this yourself, you will also learn a lot, and that will come in handy if you have to soundproof a microwave again.
Before I get into these five options, I’m going to explain the absolute first thing you NEED to do before soundproofing your microwave.
What is the first thing you need to do before soundproofing a microwave?
The first thing you need to do is inspect the microwave, and make sure that there isn’t anything wrong with it.
If your microwave is above the stove, take the microwave out of its place.
If your microwave is on the counter, just leave it there, unless you want to move it. It’s completely up to you.
You may want to have a friend or family member come over and help you soundproof your microwave, since it can hard for just one person to do it.
It also gets the job done faster, and having somebody there to help can make the process enjoyable.
After you have taken the microwave out of its place, you can either set it on the floor or counter.
After you have asked a friend or family member to help you, you can now look at the five things you can do to soundproof your microwave.
1. Place acoustic foam panels where your microwave fits (above the stove)
The first option is to place acoustic foam panels inside where your microwave fits. You can place them on all sides, or you can place them on just some of the sides.
I recommend you place them on all sides some that way you get the best results.
The microwave may be a little harder to fit in, but the way for the microwave to be able to fit in is you need to somehow glue the acoustic foam panels down so they stay while you’re trying to fit the microwave back in.
If you’re having trouble doing this yourself, you can always ask a friend or family member to help you. If you don’t have anyone to help you with this, you can still do it yourself and there is no need to hire a professional to do it for you.
It shouldn’t take you more than an hour to get this option done, since it’s very simple. The hardest part about this option is placing the microwave back in the place where you had it.
The easiest part is placing the acoustic foam panels where the microwave goes.
The next option is to cover up the air vents on the microwave.
2. Cover up the air vents on the microwave (both)
The second option is to cover up the air vents on the microwave. You can do this for both microwaves counter and above the stove.
Make sure there is still air flowing out after you cover the vent up. You can do this by cutting up the cloth that you’re going to place over the microwave. I would monitor it for some time to make sure the microwave doesn’t get overheated, and it shouldn’t if you cut holes allowing the air to flow out of the microwave.
This is great for soundproofing the microwave also because it will block the sound coming out of the air vent.
There will still be air coming out, but the cloth will muffle the sound.
You can do both of the option one and two if you want to, and I highly recommend you do in order to get the best result.
Again, if you choose this option, I would monitor it for the first few days to make sure nothing happens to the microwave.
If nothing happens after a few days, then you’ve likely did option two successfully.
The next option is to place acoustic foam panels underneath the microwave, and this will be used just for the microwave on the counter.
3. Place acoustic foam panels underneath the microwave (counter)
The third option is to Place acoustic foam panels underneath the microwave on the counter will help soundproof that microwave as well.
You can even place the acoustic foam panels on the sides of your microwave, but I don’t recommend this because there’s a chance that your microwave may look ugly with the acoustic foam panels on it.
However, if there is some way you can hide the sides of the microwave, then this could be an efficient way to soundproof it.
This is likely the easiest option on the list, and you can get this option done in as little as a few minutes.
Once you place the acoustic foam panels underneath the microwave, and the sides of your microwave if you decided to do that, you can then test it out to make sure it’s working.
The next option is to replace the fan in your microwave, and this is used for both the microwave on the counter, and above the stove.
4. Replace the fan in your microwave (both)
The fourth option is to replace the fan in your microwave, and this can be used for both the microwave on the counter and the microwave above the stove.
The fan in your microwave maybe to blame for the sound, and you may need to fix it or replace it.
Most of the time, you’ll have to replace your fan in the microwave, and it is next to impossible to be able to fix the fan.
You may risk making the sound worse if you try to fix the fan yourself, so I would just go and buy a new fan for your microwave.
You can get the fans for super cheap on sites like Amazon, or you could go to stores like Lowes, Home Depot, Sears, or wherever place sells fans for microwaves.
The next option is to consider purchasing a new microwave.
5. Consider purchasing a new microwave
The fifth option is to consider purchasing a new microwave. If all else fails, you still have the option to purchase a new microwave.
There are microwaves that have little to no sound, and they will heat up your food or drink with no problem at all.
You can go to sites like Amazon to purchase your microwave. They have a very good selection, and you won’t even have to leave your house to purchase the microwave.
You can also go to stores like Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, Sears, etc. to get your microwave, and they have pretty good selections also.
Conclusion
Soundproofing a microwave can be challenging, but it is totally doable and there’s no need to hire a professional to soundproof your microwave for you.
I hope you found this helpful, and good luck on soundproofing!
